In the southeast of Mallorca, the Pla i Llevant Designation of Origin (DO) connects 19 towns with a seaside winemaking history. With 12 wineries, 85 winegrowers and more than 500 hectares of vineyards, this DO is committed to native varieties, Mediterranean character and winegrowing influenced by the sea winds known as embats.
Founded in 1999, the ‘DO Pla i Llevant’ brings together 19 towns that share the same landscape of vines at sea level, influenced by the sun, sea breeze and centuries of winemaking history. Its hub is in Felanitx, with the old Estació Enològica (Oenological Station) converted into the new Regulatory Council headquarters.
Callet, Fogoneu, Premsal Blanc and Giró Ros are some of the local grape varieties used in fresh white wines, fruity rosés, characteristic reds and elegant sparkling wines. The sea winds—’embats’—provide a refreshing saline profile to these wines, giving shape to a product with a strong identity. The sea, the climate and the land create a palette of aromas and flavours difficult to reproduce. Here, each glass tells a story of the landscape, past and future. A Designation of Origin where tradition comes to life with each vintage.
Beyond wine, Pla i Llevant offers the chance to try authentic food. Many wineries open their doors to visitors for guided tastings, food and wine pairings and samplings of local products such as cheese, olive oil and traditional cured meat. It's a way of getting to know the land through your taste buds, and enjoying Mallorcan hospitality at its best.
