Menorcan olive oil, known as ‘Oli de Menorca’, is more than just an extra virgin olive oil; it is a statement of Menorca’s land and customs. Obtained from olive trees grown in the fertile lands near the sea, caressed by the Tramontane wind, this oil stands out for its balanced fruity green flavour, with bitter and spicy notes that make it really special.
Olive growing in Menorca dates back to Roman times, and today, each bottle of Oli de Menorca is the result of centuries of dedication and care. Hand-picking of the green olives, followed by cold pressing, ensures that each drop retains all the sensory properties of the fruit.
Oil production in Menorca follows strict eco-friendly methods. The olive trees, planted in carbonate-rich soils, are carefully pruned each year to maximise sun exposure and ensure a healthy, plentiful harvest. The olives, carefully selected and sorted, are processed within a maximum of 24 hours to preserve their freshness. Oli de Menorca is distinguished by its physical, chemical and sensory properties. With a maximum acidity of 0.5% and a peroxide value of 15 meq O2/kg, this oil is bold with a green fruitiness (≥3.5) and perfectly balanced bitter and spicy flavours.
Oli de Menorca has been recognised for its quality in numerous international competitions. In particular, it has been recognised at the London International Olive Oil Competition and was awarded the Biofach Olive Oil Award, ranking among the best organic oils in the world. This oil encapsulates the authentic Menorca. Its flavours are the result of the Mediterranean climate and the dedication of local farmers. Tasting this oil lets you appreciate the effort to preserve traditional practices that not only produce an exceptional oil, but also protect the island’s natural environment.
Since 1993, Menorca has been recognised as a Biosphere Reserve, underlining the importance of its biodiversity and sustainable farming practices. Oli de Menorca is both delicious and eco-friendly, as it is produced in a way that respects and protects the environment. The most common olive varieties grown in Menorca are Arbequina, Koroneiki, Picual and Empeltre, all adapted to the island’s climate. Some producers also add wild olive oil, adding unique nuances to the blend.
In every drop of Oli de Menorca, you can find the passion for the land and tradition. It enhances any dish, while also telling a story of dedication and respect for nature. Whether drizzled over a fresh salad, fish dish or eaten simply with bread, Oli de Menorca offers you a dining experience you’re sure to remember.
