María Marí imagined a new future for the Can Musón family farm, which is now a reality. At this organic farm, visitors can wander around its different crops, get close to the animals and enjoy the produce of a land that means everything to it. Today, its model is internationally renowned and they receive enquiries from the likes of the USA, France, Italy and Belgium.
Question: What is Can Musón?
Answer: Can Musón is a family farm that I began managing in 2008. Little by little I’ve transformed it into what it is today: a place where we grow all kinds of crops and welcome visitors to promote sustainability, education and respect for nature. It’s a project that I’m deeply passionate about.
Question: How did you go from being a decorator to managing an organic farm?
Answer: It was a journey full of learning and challenges. I did several courses on organic farming and farm management. However, a large part of my knowledge came from hands-on experience, making mistakes and learning from them. The first few years were tough, with lots of failures and disasters, but every one of those mistakes taught me something valuable and helped me to improve.
Question: Did you always have the vision of opening the farm to the public?
Answer: No, initially I just wanted to look after the farm and make some improvements, but as more people came to visit and showed interest, especially in seeing the animals, I realised we needed to better organise the space. So, in 2011 we started to set up specific areas for visits.
Question: What importance do children have for Can Musón?
Answer: Children are a key part of our project. Here, they can interact with animals and learn about where food comes from. We put on activities to show them about life on the farm, the source of food and respect for nature. We think this education is vital for combating ignorance around food, so they don’t think that products simply come from the supermarket. At our farm, children can collect eggs, see how vegetables grow and get to know the animals up close. This kind of experience is not just educational, but also fosters greater respect and appreciation for nature and agriculture.
Question: What do you produce at Can Musón?
Answer: We grow a wide variety of produce like potatoes, lettuce, onions, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, watermelons and melons. We also make jam and offer breakfast with eggs and juice using fresh ingredients from the farm. Recently, we’ve also started a beekeeping project to produce our own honey. It’s really interesting because it also allows us to educate visitors on the importance of bees for the ecosystem.
Question: How do you distribute your produce?
Answer: We sell everything at the direct sales points we have on the farm. We also include produce from other organic farmers in the area.
Question: How would you define produce from Ibiza?
Answer: Of high quality. Sorry, I misspoke—of incredible quality. Produce that comes from elsewhere, even if it’s organic, is not as special. The best produce is always local.
Question: Why do you think there is greater demand for organic produce?
Answer: People are becoming more and more aware of the importance of a healthy diet. Although organic produce is more expensive due to the manual labour required, those who understand its value are prepared to pay more for quality and sustainability. There’s also growing recognition of the importance of supporting local producers and reducing the carbon footprint linked to food transport. At Can Musón, we see this trend reflected in the loyalty of our customers.
Question: How do you see the future of agriculture and livestock farming in Ibiza?
Answer: I think there’s a revival. The desire for local and organic produce is growing, and with that, the number of people prepared to invest in this kind of production. However, we need more support and less bureaucracy to allow the industry to thrive. Agriculture and livestock farming in Ibiza has huge potential, but they’re facing significant challenges, especially in terms of regulation and financial support.
Question: What does Can Musón mean to you on a personal level?
Answer: Can Musón has given me life. In 2011 I was diagnosed with cancer and the project gave me strength to keep going and fight. Now it brings me peace, happiness and a huge feeling of pride for what we’ve achieved. Today, it’s not just my job, but also my passion and safe haven.
María Marí has managed to turn Can Musón into a beacon of innovation and tradition by combining organic farming with environmental education. Her dedication and love for the land have turned the farm into an internationally-recognised example, offering visitors from all over the world a unique, authentic experience in the heart of Ibiza.
