Malvasia from Banyalbufar is the liquid soul of southwestern Mallorca.
Among terraces hanging over the Mediterranean and dry stone walls, Banyalbufar maintains one of the most fascinating winegrowing tales in Mallorca. There, the Malvasia grape has been making a fierce yet elegant comeback since the 2000s. Today, wineries such as Can Pico and Cooperativa Malvasía produce bold white wines that capture centuries of heritage in every glass.
Malvasia came from Greece and found its place on the steep terraces of Banyalbufar, sculpted by the Arabs in the 11th century. For centuries, these vines defined the landscape and the character of the town, until phylloxera wiped them out in 1891. It wasn't until 1999 that a group of locals recovered this historical gem to restore the local vineyard to its former glory.
Banyalbufar, which means ‘nestled by the sea’, is now a town known for a white wine with its own personality: bold aromas, saline notes and a vibrant structure. Wineries like Can Pico and Cooperativa Malvasía de Banyalbufar produce small batches, taking care of every detail. The vines ripen at different rates, allowing for a staggered harvest that enhances the must's quality.
