Wines Overlooking the Sea: Sa Malvasia in Banyalbufar
In Banyalbufar, where vineyards overlook the Mediterranean, a group of locals recovered the Malvasia grape after it was lost for almost a century. Thus Sa Malvasia was born, a cooperative that now produces white, sweet and rosé wines under the ‘Vi de la Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord’ Designation of Origin.
At the end of the 19th century, phylloxera devastated the vineyards in Banyalbufar. But in the 1980s, a forgotten strain of Malvasia was revived through the determination of some locals who dreamed of recovering the wine of their childhood. Today, this collective effort has found success under the label ‘Cooperativa de Sa Malvasia de Banyalbufar’. On cobbled terraces in the Tramuntana mountains, they grow and make their own wines. These include the dry white ‘Cornet’, with notes of pear and peach; the sweet ‘Cornet Dolç’, aged for six months in oak barrels with floral aromas; and the rosé ‘Xop’, fresh and light. All these wines are full of history and character, the result of a unique microclimate and traditional practices. The cooperative works with small-scale production, sells mainly in Mallorca and upholds the community spirit with which it began. Each bottle captures landscapes, history and pride in the land. And as they say, it's best enjoyed in good company.
