Oliver Moragues: 15 Generations of Passion and Tradition
In the heart of Mallorca, Possessió Binicomprat estate has witnessed centuries of winegrowing tradition. From the conquest of Jaume I in 1229 to the partnership between two winemaking families in the 20th century, this place embodies a passion for wine that spans 15 generations. Its vineyards, located 265 metres above sea level, reap the benefits of unique conditions that create fresh, elegant wines marked by a Mediterranean character.
The history of Oliver Moragues actually begins in 1229, when King Jaume I conquered Mallorca and gave the lands of Binicomprat to the Order of the Knights Templar. This winemaking tradition grew stronger in 1511, when the current family acquired the property, using it to produce wine and other crops.
In 1785, Chaplain Despuig classified Binicomprat as one of the most important ‘Possessions’, or estates, on the island. The Oliver Moragues vineyards, located at an elevation of 265 metres, enjoy a steady breeze and cooler temperatures than the rest of Mallorca. This microclimate, in conjunction with the soil rich in clay, silt, gravel and sand from the Quaternary period, makes it possible to produce fresh, balanced wines with a lower alcohol content and notable structure. These wines are vinted under the ‘Vi de la Terra Mallorca’ label.
Joana Oliver Moragues, heir to this rich tradition, highlights the importance of working with a sense of respect for the land and minimising contamination. The partnership between the Oliver Ribas de Cabrera and the Moragues Ribas de Pina families in the early 20th century bolstered Binicomprat’s position as one of the most long-standing winegrowing families in Mallorca, constantly looking back to its origins to make the best wines.
