The Mallorcan Grandmother Who Conquered YouTube With Her Traditional Recipes

At the age of 87, María Gibert has become a symbol of Mallorcan cuisine on the internet, with millions of views on her YouTube channel

Maria Gibert, aged 87, has gained fame on social media with her Mallorcan recipes. If you're looking for a typical island recipe, one of hers is likely to be the first to pop up. With more than 8.5 million views on YouTube, this great-grandmother has won the hearts of many by keeping her homeland’s traditional food alive. From the age of nine, when she prepared her first fideuá, right up to today, her aim has been clear: to preserve the Balearic Islands’ traditional recipes for generations to come.

Question: Who would’ve thought you’d end up being a YouTuber?

Answer: I would’ve never imagined it. I’m very proud to have done my bit to spread the word about Mallorcan food.

Question: Why did you decide to start your own YouTube channel? Do you feel you’ve achieved the initial goal that drove you to start it?

Answer: The idea came from my grandson Joan. He was the one who pushed me to take the step. My grandson always told me that my cooking was great and that I could explain it through videos to the rest of the world. With these videos, we’ve made sure that age-old Mallorcan recipes will be preserved forever, and that future generations can learn them. In other words, the traditional cuisine of the Balearic Islands will not be lost and will continue to be cooked for years to come.

Question: Who has helped you with this project?

Answer: I have always had the full support of my family, but as I said, it all started with my grandson Joan.

Question: Your social media is full of messages of thanks and congratulations. What does this mean to you?

Answer: I am so grateful for all the messages I get. It’s a pleasure to see how your recipes can help so many people. It fills my heart and is the most beautiful thing a person can receive.

Question: What’s the nicest thing anyone has said to you?

Answer: They are always beautiful messages, messages of thanks, and lots of them touch me. A lot of people remember their childhood through these recipes, others remember the recipes of family members who are no longer with them...

Question: You haven’t posted any recipes for three years. Is this a definite goodbye?

Answer: We no longer film recipes, but anyone can see them all on our website www.recetasmallorquinas.es or on our social media channels. So, it's not a definite goodbye. We will still respond to comments and share recipes that have already been prepared...

Question: Martin Berasategui said that you’re one of the people responsible for the cuisine of today. What a compliment.

Answer: It’s so gratifying to hear these words from one of the leading figures in Spanish cuisine.

Question: Who taught you how to cook?

Answer: Out of necessity I had to learn by myself. My parents died when I was 21, and I had to take care of the house and cook for my seven siblings. With very few ingredients and little money, I prepared dishes for my brothers and sisters, and that's how I learned.

Question: Have you cooked much in your life?

Answer: Very much so. I haven't stopped cooking since I was 21. Now I'm over 86 years old and I'm still cooking dishes.

Question: What does cooking mean to you? What's in it for you?

Answer: Cooking is my passion, it gives me life. I also put all my love and care into it to make sure the dishes turn out exquisite. And the reward is knowing that those who’ll be eating your dishes will enjoy every bite.

Question: What’s your favourite dish?

Answer: I love Mallorcan cuisine, but there are two dishes that are my favourites: Mallorcan soup and tombet.

Question: How would you describe Mallorcan food? What makes it so special?

Answer: Mallorcan cuisine is all-round excellent. We have a wide range of high-quality products. It’s really important to have good raw ingredients for cooking, and in the Balearic Islands we are fortunate to have high-quality products.

Question: Although your website and channel are called Gastronomía mallorquina (Mallorcan Gastronomy), you dare to try recipes from all the islands. Is there a dish you won’t attempt?

Answer: On the website you can find recipes from Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. There’s no dish I won’t attempt. Sometimes it doesn't turn out well the first time, but I’ll try again and it turns out better.
