In Petra, Bartomeu Gual has turned his passion for bees into an artisanal beekeeping project: Apicultura Son Frare. Since 2014, he’s been producing raw, unheated, unfiltered honey from organically handled native bees. His hives are open to visitors to learn about and appreciate them. Because caring for bees means caring for the future.
Apicultura Son Frare is more than a small beekeeping business: it’s a statement of principles. On his family farm in Petra, Bartomeu Gual tends to his bees as his parents did before him, but with a focus on sustainability. No artificial feed, no pesticides and conscious hand-harvesting.
The spring and autumn honey varies in colour and flavour, depending on the local flowers in bloom. Raw, unfiltered and unheated, all its properties are kept intact. They also produce propolis and wax in the traditional way. Under the ‘EsMel’ brand and with a clear commitment to the environment, Bartomeu opens the gates to his farm to share the world of beekeeping with anyone who wants to witness the vibrating buzz of his bees. Guided tours for children and adults are part of his way of educating about and supporting local products.
