The Fig Revolution in Mallorca
On a family farm, Flor de Figa is a venture that has revived the cultivation of fig and almond trees based on an organic, innovative vision that’s deeply rooted in the land. With their own prepared products and local sales, they’re committed to fresh fruit, dried fruit and artisanal methods to revive appreciation for a traditional crop.
Flor de Figa was born from the commitment of a family to keep dry farming alive in Mallorca. They decided to back fig and almond trees as a way of reconnecting with the land, based on an organic, self-sustainable local model. On their farm, they’ve set up an experimental plantation with traditional and mainland varieties of fig tree, always dry-farmed and certified organic.
They have their own shed for drying figs and making jams and fig paste. Fresh figs are sold in individual boxes to ensure quality and reduce waste. They also work with other producers so the drying shed can be used in other seasons. Awarded for ‘Generational Change’ at the 2023 Rural Up Awards, they advocate for the recovering the agricultural use of rural land through a profitable, respectful model. At Flor de Figa, they cultivate the present with the taste of the future.
