Can Caló is an organic farm in Ruberts, Mallorca, which grows fruit, vegetables and local grains such as xeixa wheat. Committed to sustainable production, they avoid the use of chemicals and protect local biodiversity. They also make products such as sobrassada, jams and flour, which can be found at the island’s organic markets and specialist shops.
Can Caló farm, with seven hectares of crops, is leading the revival of local varieties while dedicated to organic production certified by the Balearic Council for Organic Farming (CBPAE). They grow almond trees, carob trees and traditional vegetables such as ramallet tomatoes and tap de cortí paprika, a key Mallorcan ingredient. They also produce xeixa wheat, an ancient variety that has seen a comeback thanks to conservation projects promoted by local farmers.
Can Caló’s model is based on crop rotation, extensive livestock farming with Mallorcan black pigs and Menorcan cows, and the production of sausages and sauces using traditional recipes. Their products are sold at organic markets in Palma and Santa María, and through partnered businesses. The farm also offers guided tours with tastings to spread awareness of traditional agriculture and the importance of zero-mile products in Mallorca.
