Coinga: The Menorcan Cooperative Making History
Since 1966, Coinga has been working to make sure Menorca’s cheese-making tradition and countryside thrive, as one of the leading, most renowned cooperatives in Spain. With a network of 80 local farms, Coinga produces Mahón-Menorca cheese through a sustainable artisan process, with a focus on animal welfare and quality in each product. This commitment has won them more than 40 awards and an important spot on the global cheese map.
Coinga, Cooperativa Insular Ganadera, was founded in 1966 by a union of small livestock farmers in Menorca, with the aim of protecting cheese-making and the sustainability of local farms. Today, with more than 80 member farms and its headquarters in Alaior, Coinga continues to innovate in the making of DOP Mahón-Menorca cheese, famous for its unique flavour, elaborated from the island's natural produce and environment. This cheese is produced in the varieties tierno (mild), semicurado (medium) and curado (mature), each reflecting the quality and spirit of Menorca.
Awarded as the Best Cooperative in Spain in Rural Development 2021, Coinga has been recognised for its commitment to sustainable development and its support for local farms. Every day, milk from their cows is collected in refrigerated lorries from the various farms, ensuring freshness in every product. Furthermore, their careful ageing process and dedication to animal welfare have led Coinga to win more than 40 awards at international cheese competitions.
Coinga's Mahón-Menorca cheese has been recognised at the World Cheese Awards and other prestigious events, being selected among the best cheeses in the world. The Regulatory Council of the DOP Mahón-Menorca label guarantees the quality of the cheese by means of regular inspections, and each piece has the authenticity label that distinguishes true Menorcan cheese. Coinga, with more than half a century of experience, stands firmly committed to the sustainability and authenticity of Menorcan dairy products.
