Tomàtiga de Ramellet Guarantee Mark

Warranty marks

The native tomato of Mallorca stands out for its unique flavour and its ability to transform any dish.

The tomàtiga de ramellet is a favourite in Mallorca for its distinctive flavour and aroma, its long shelf life and its ability to soak the bread when making the traditional “pa amb oli” (bread with oil). This tomato is round and slightly flattened in shape, small in size and has thick, hardy skin. The balance of acidity and sweetness in its flavour make it an essential ingredient in Mallorcan cuisine.

Ramellet tomatoes, strung up in clusters, are one of the treasures of the gardens of Mallorca. Their distinctive flavour and aroma make them one of the most highly valued native varieties on the island. This variety is unique to Mallorca and can be eaten even in winter. After they are harvested, the tomatoes are hung from the ceiling on strings, placed on reeds or in crates. Their orangish-red colour and generous flesh make them perfect for spreading on bread.

The ramellet tomato is the essential ingredient in “pa amb oli”, one of the pillars of Mallorcan cuisine. The tomato is rubbed on a slice of brown bread, which may or may not be toasted, releasing its flesh and full flavour. Then, extra virgin olive oil is drizzled over it and a touch of salt is added. That’s all that is needed to enjoy the simplest yet most flavourful dish of Mallorcan cuisine, although it can be topped off with a few slices of cheese and cold cuts as a finishing touch.

Ramellet tomatoes are grown alongside other tomato varieties that are eaten fresh. The fields are dotted with reed structures so that the tomato vines can climb towards the sky. Banyalbufar is one of the villages that benefited from the glory days of the ramellet tomato, staking its claim as the birthplace of this product. In the ‘30s, Banyalbufar became the village with the highest per capita income on the island thanks to this crop.

The Agromallorca Plant Defence Association (ADV) created and registered this guarantee mark to distinguish cluster-type tomatoes grown in Mallorca. This label ensures that the tomatoes meet strict quality standards, offering consumers an authentic, high-quality product.

These tomatoes may be sold in packages or without packaging, but must remain traceable until they reach the consumer. They are labelled with the guarantee mark logo, either on the packaging or individually. The Agromallorca ADV carries out strict controls to ensure that the tomatoes bearing the guarantee mark label meet the established requirements, disqualifying any harvests that are not up to standard.

This variety is so widespread in Mallorca that it can be purchased individually or strung into clusters at markets, fruit and vegetable stands and any type of grocery establishment. Each tomato with the guarantee mark represents centuries of tradition and dedication to quality.
