The ESMEL guarantee mark, managed by Agrupació per a la Defensa de l’Abella Autòctona Mallorquina (the Association for the Defence of the Native Mallorcan Bee), certifies the excellence of honey produced in Mallorca. Authorised beekeepers and packers follow strict requirements to ensure that every drop of honey meets the highest quality and purity standards. Free from chemical treatments or feeding during honey-making, ESMEL honey stands out for its botanical origin, ranging from blossom honey to honeydew honey and presented as comb honey, chunk honey and extracted honey.
The ESMEL label ensures that responsible, sustainable beekeeping practices are used in the honey production. Producers must follow stringent regulations covering everything from apiary handling to honey extraction, filtration and bottling. In addition, apiaries must be identified and registered, thus ensuring comprehensive product traceability. Apiaries that produce ESMEL honey cannot undergo any kind of chemical treatment or artificial feeding during the honey-making period. The regulations specify the types of honey that can be produced according to their botanical origin, including blossom honey and honeydew honey, which may be presented in the form of comb honey, chunk honey and extracted honey.
The regulations governing the ESMEL label establish precise conditions for use of the quality seal, including: Proper production practices: apiary handling and collection, extraction, filtration, storage, packaging and labelling of the honey. Apiary identification methods and traceability records. Beekeeper and packer sign-up and registration procedures. Sensory, physical, chemical and melissopalynological characteristics of the honey that can bear the label.
