Explore the port of Maó and visit the Xoriguer Gin distillery

The port of Maó, one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, is a place steeped in history. Having been a British naval base during seventy years of control over the island, wandering through this enclave is a fascinating glimpse into a past that still lingers today. One of the clearest examples is Menorcan gin. On the western side of the port is the Xoriguer Gin distillery. A visit to its facilities offers a tour that combines flavour with just as much history.

The port of Maó was a strategic point for the British in the 18th century. Today, a stroll through this port is not only a journey through Menorca's history, but also an opportunity to enjoy its vibrant atmosphere. With restaurants, cafes and bars lining the quayside, it's the perfect setting to relax and take in the views.

There are beautiful examples of English architecture, as well the islands Illa del Rei and Illa del Llatzeret. Hiring one of the boats that travel around the port can be a great way to discover all its secrets. The Xoriguer Gin distillery on the western side of the port is a must. This unique gin is made using the island's own botanicals, giving it a distinct, unique flavour. With the arrival of the British marines in the 18th century, distilleries began to make gin in response to demand. Xoriguer Gin comes from a recipe recovered from almost 300 years ago.

A visit to the distillery begins with an explanation of the history of Xoriguer Gin, followed by a tour of the copper stills where the gin is distilled. Visitors can learn about how juniper berries are selected and prepared, and see first-hand the brewing process that has been handed down from generation to generation. The experience finishes with tasting some of the distillery's products, together with typical Menorcan sausages and pastries. We recommend booking in advance.
