Sineu and Its Market: Where Tradition Is Left Untouched
Dating back 700 years, Mercat de Sineu is one of Mallorca’s leading markets. Every Wednesday from 8am to 2pm, the town centre comes alive with fruit, vegetables, cheese, cured sausages, wine, craft products and farm tools. This is the only weekly market on the island that still trades livestock, keeping alive a tradition that dates back to the Islamic era.
Since its origins in the Islamic era, Mercat de Sineu has been a key place for buying goods in Mallorca. In 1306, King James II of Mallorca gave the market protected status, and today it still attracts market-goers every Wednesday from 8am to 2pm.
With stalls in two squares, Plaça des Fossar and Plaça des Mercadal, the market is known for its range of fruit, vegetables, cheese, wine, leather goods, flowers and farm tools. It is especially famous for the sale of livestock that still takes place there, a unique tradition on the island.
Beyond the market, Sineu maintains a historic feel, with stately houses, windmills and the Church of Santa Maria de Sineu. The food there is also a must, with dishes such as snails and the classic fried meat dish frit mallorquí, the perfect way to round off the experience. Easily accessible by car or public transport, it continues to be a must-visit destination in Mallorca.
