In the south of Ciutadella, Finca Sa Marjaleta produces Menorcan wines under the Vi de la Terra Illes Balears label. With varieties such as Syrah, Viognier and Ull de Llebre, their ‘Iamontanum’ range recalls the island's Roman heritage. Artisan production on clay-rich, stony soils leads to award-winning premium wine.
At Sa Marjaleta, located a few kilometres from Cala en Turqueta, history meets winegrowing on this family estate that has gone from livestock farming to wine production. Across two hectares of south-facing vineyards, protected by a gentle slope, the varieties Syrah, Viognier and Ull de Llebre grow in chalky soils that provide minerality and freshness.
The winery, which is inside an old cheese factory, produces three labels under the name ‘Iamontanum’, a nod to Ciutadella's Roman past. These include ‘Iamontanum Negre Criança’, aged for 12 months in American oak barrels, and the premium ‘Iamontanum Blanc’, made from Viognier. Both varieties reflect the careful hand-selection and craftsmanship of the process.
Making just 4,000 bottles a year, Sa Marjaleta distributes its wines locally and has won awards for their quality, including 95 Parker points for the 2010 ‘Iamontanum Negre’. Sa Marjaleta is more than just a winery; it is a testimony to Menorca's rich farming history and culture.
