Avocados from Mallorca: Flavour, Sustainability and Tradition
S'Hort des Bosc is a venture rooted in the landscape of Esporles, where farmer Miquel Tena grows summer fruit, especially avocados, based on an organic farming approach. This revived farm at the Son Cabaspre estate is governed by a model of conscious, local, sustainable farming adapted to climate change, without sacrificing quality.
The future of the Balearic countryside depends on initiatives like that of Miquel Tena. On a farm located in Camí de Son Cabaspre, at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains, he grows more than 2,000 avocado trees of different varieties, intended to supply the local market almost all year round. S'Hort des Bosc advocates for the responsible use of water and organic production as cornerstones of a new way of farming. Humidity sensors and the revival of traditional fruit trees are part of a commitment to sustainability.
The avocado, often criticised, finds a new narrative here: one of smart management, biodiversity and close ties to the land. With varieties such as Bacon, Fuerte and Hass, Miquel proves that it’s possible to produce ethically and in harmony with the environment. His goal is to establish a ‘Serra de Tramuntana Avocado’ label that recognises not just origin, but also environmental commitment and quality.
