Mercat des Claustre: 140 Years of Tradition and Local Goods
Since 1884, the Mercat des Claustre (Cloister Market), also known as Sa Plaça, has been the main local market in Maó. Open every day, it offers more than 30 shops where you can find fruit, vegetables, cured sausages, fashion, handicrafts and restaurants. Housed in a former neoclassical cloister, its historic charm combines with a bustling shopping environment and cultural events throughout the year.
Located inside the Cloister of the Church of El Carmen, the Mercat des Claustre combines tradition and modernity in a unique space. Throughout the market you’ll find local products such as cheese, sobrassada, handmade bread and Menorcan wine, together with fashion shops, shoe shops and florists.
The market is also a lively space, with a calendar of cultural activities and food events including workshops, concerts and shows. On the ground floor, there’s also a supermarket, making daily shopping easy for locals and visitors alike.
With long opening hours from Monday to Saturday from 8am to 9pm and Sundays until 2pm, the market is a top gathering place in Maó, where history, tradition and local life come together in an iconic setting.
