The Rebirth of Bodega Santa Catarina
Founded in 1984 by Stellan Lundqvist, Bodega Santa Catarina has been at the forefront of fine wine production in Mallorca. After ceasing operations in 2002, Lundqvist’s sons took over the family legacy in 2014, embarking on an ambitious project to give it new life. Through its commitment to native and Mediterranean varieties, and a focus on sustainability, the winery seeks to regain its prestige in the wine market.
The history of Bodega Santa Catarina begins in 1984, when Stellan Lundqvist decided to plant French noble varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Chardonnay in Mallorca’s peculiar climate. It soon gained a reputation for the quality and singularity of its wines.
However, in 2002, the winery ceased its activity and leased its vineyards. It wasn’t until 2014 that Lundqvist's sons decided to take up their father's dream, by grubbing up 49 hectares of deteriorated vineyards to and replanting native and Mediterranean varieties.
The rebirth of Santa Catarina is based on sustainable production and the best quality grapes. On the Son Aloy estate, one of the largest vineyards in Mallorca, the Mediterranean climate and looking after for the environment are key. With varieties such as Callet, Syrah, and Giró Ros, and harvesting by hand, Santa Catarina is ready to take back its seat of honour in the world of wine. The wine belongs to ‘DOP Vi Terra de Mallorca’ and ‘DOP Binissalem’.
