4Kilos Vinícola: From a Garage to Worldwide Recognition
In the idyllic landscape of Mallorca, Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero founded the winery 4Kilos Vinícola in 2006, revolutionising the world of wine with their innovative approach and commitment to quality. From the first vintage produced in a garage to worldwide recognition, 4Kilos Vinícola stands out for its respect for terroir and dedication to sustainable winegrowing. In August 2006, oenologist Francesc Grimalt and musician Sergio Caballero joined forces to create 4Kilos Vinícola in Mallorca. With the aim pursuing a different approach to making wines that embody the strength of the grape, they began their adventure in the garage of a winegrower friend.
Their first wine, ‘4Kilos 2006’, was fermented in milk cooling tanks and open barrels, showing their resourcefulness and passion for detail. The wine belongs to the Protected Designation of Origin ‘Vi de la Terra de Mallorca’. In 2007, Grimalt and Caballero, together with Apolónia Viticultors, converted an old stable on the outskirts of Felanitx into a modern winery.
There they produced ‘4Kilos 2007’ and launched a new project: ‘12Volts 2007’. Their working method varies according to the vintage, fermenting in oak or stainless steel, with an ageing process adapted to each wine’s specific requirements. The philosophy of 4Kilos Vinícola goes beyond grape varieties; it targets the entire vine/soil/climate/winegrowing combination.
Working closely with local winegrowers, they practise environmentally friendly winegrowing. Their grapevines, planted in soils rich in ferric oxide in the north and south of Mallorca, produce strong grapes full of character.
The name ‘4Kilos’ symbolises the initial investment of four million pesetas, proving you don’t need a large fortune to create exceptional wines, just an unwavering passion for quality. Each bottle of 4Kilos Vinícola is the result of Grimalt and Caballero’s commitment to excellence and authenticity.
