From Field to Market: AgroMartí Revives Local Agriculture in Formentera
At Can Martí farm, AgroMartí works hard to revive traditional agriculture in Formentera by growing organic grains, fruit and vegetables. Their produce, certified by the Balearic Council for Organic Farming (CBPAE), is distributed to Mercat Pagès de Sant Francesc and some of the best restaurants on the island. Moreover, their cultivation system keeps the rural landscape alive, offering some of the production to the owners of the farms where they operate.
AgroMartí is the result of Martí Juan Mayans’ passion for the land and organic production. For more than a decade, they’ve been leaders in Formentera, offering zero-mile produce that captures the essence of the island. They currently grow crops such as potatoes, courgettes, tomatoes, peppers and local grains such as xeixa wheat. Every morning, the harvest is taken to the market and selected restaurants to ensure maximum freshness.
AgroMartí is committed to reviving local seeds at risk of disappearing, such as meló eriçó from Ibiza and traditional varieties of tomato. The biggest challenge for production on Formentera is the scarcity of water and fertile soil. For this reason, AgroMartí prioritises quality over quantity, ensuring responsible cultivation methods that guarantees tasty, authentic produce.
